Four-Toed Elephant Shrew
Petrodromus tetradactylus
The four-toed elephant shrew, (Petrodromus tetradactylus) is found in Africa, where it inhabits subtropical and tropical dry forests and savannas.
It possesses a long, flexible, and highly sensitive snout, used to probe the ground for food with surprising precision. When feeding, it eats in a manner reminiscent of anteaters, flicking insects neatly into its mouth.
Disagreements between individuals may escalate into upright "boxing" matches, in which they balance on their hind legs and strike with their forelimbs.
Madagascan Sunset Moth
Chrysiridia rhipheus
The Madagascan Sunset Moth (Chrysiridia rhipheus) is native to the island of Madagascar, where it inhabits forests and open woodland. Unlike most moths, it is active during the day and is famous for its dazzling wings, which shimmer with bands of green, blue, red, and orange. The colour is produced not by pigments but by scattering and interference of light by the microstructure of ribbon-like scales across the wings.
Its caterpillars feed exclusively on plants of the Omphalea genus, absorbing toxins that make both the caterpillar and the adult moth unpalatable to predators.
